Leucocyte ascorbic acid and pressure sores in paraplegia.

چکیده
I. Leucocyte ascorbic acid concentration was measured in ninety-one paraplegic patients and in forty-one control subjects. Patients and controls were subdivided into males and females, and into smokers and non-smokers. 2. For each subgroup, mean results were lower in the patients than in the controls and lower in patients with pressure sores than in patients without pressure sores. The leucocyte ascorbic acid concentrations oEpatients were significantly lower than those of the corresponding controls for the male smokers with sores, the female non-smokers with sores and the female non-smokers without sores. Leucocyte ascorbic acid concentration was less than I j pg/g/Io* white blood corpuscles in 23 04 of the paticnts studied. 3. The pressure sores of seven patients were studied by biopsy before and after the administration of 0.5 g ascorbic acid twice daily for 3 d. 4. The samples from the second biopsy stained more intensely €or collagen than those from the first. In three other patients studied similarly but given a placebo this effcct was not observed.

Relationship between leucocyte and plasma ascorbic acid concentrations.
Leucocyte and plasma ascorbic acid values were measured in healthy students, adult factory employees, and old people not receiving supplementary vitamin C and in healthy old people receiving 500 mg of vitamin C daily. Significant positive correlations between leucocyte and plasma ascorbic acid were found in all the groups. The regression lines differed significantly between one another within t...
متن کاملLeucocyte ascorbic acid concentration and plasma ascorbic acid levels in children with various infections.
In this study leucocyte ascorbic acid concentrations and plasma ascorbic acid levels were measured simultaneously and correlation between these two variables was sought in various bacterial and viral infections. A total of 258 patients were studied. The control group consisted of 21 healthy children in the same age group. Except for scarlet fever no significant differences were observed between...
متن کاملReassessment of changes in leucocyte and serum ascorbic acid after acute myocardial infarction.
After an acute myocardial infarction, there is an apparent acute fall in leucocyte ascorbic acid associated with an acute rise in white blood cells and serum cortisol. The apparent fall in leucocyte ascorbic acid is the result of the granulocytosis which occurs after the infarction. Estimations of ascorbic acid disclose that the granulocyte contains approximately half the ascorbic acid of the l...
